Have a few spare minutes to fill with a quick prep kids’ craft? Paper straw necklaces are fun for kids of all ages.

And, since paper straws come in so many fun colors and patterns, it’s a perfect activity for any holiday under the sun.


Getting Ready
The prep for this paper straw necklace is super easy and quick. To get ready, I grabbed just three items:

First, kids cut the paper straws into smaller pieces that were each about one inch long.



After a large handful of pieces were cut, they threaded the various pieces onto the string until it reached the entire length.

For younger kids, you can knot a pony bead to one end of the string to keep the straws from falling off.

If the string is still too challenging, let them try thread the cut pieces onto a pipe cleaner. It is easier to hold for younger children as it retains it shapes while threading.



Finally, I helped the kids pull the two ends together and tie them off.  Voila!  Our beautiful straw necklace was complete.



Making the necklaces was a wonderful way to practice threading, cutting, and hand eye coordination – great activities for building fine motor development kids need for writing later.
