"Plique à Jour" is a French term that means "braid letting in daylight". The term refers to the technique in which enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing. This allows light to shine through the transparent or translucent enamel and form a beautiful stained glass like appearance.
During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and brought on what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s onward, and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics.
An outstanding Egyptian Revival plique-à-jour scarab necklace from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era! This museum quality piece is crafted in sterling silver gilt, and depicts a scarab beetle resting between colorful open wings. At the center is a faience earthenware scarab body, which is tan in color and textured with hand-carved details. The majestic curved wings at either side display vibrant shades of pink, yellow, and green plique-à-jour, with each color fading gradually into the next. Two elegant birds frame the scarab beetle, and are adorned with iridescent green and yellow enamel to compliment the decorative wings. Completing the design are two strands of fine draped chain, and two green and yellow links that dangle freely at the base, adding lovely movement. The spectacular centerpiece hangs from a sterling chain that has been attached to the top of the wings, fastening with a spring ring clasp in the back. When worn, it hangs prominently at the neckline, making a true statement! An incredible antique collector's piece, it will delight any plique-à-jour or Egyptian Revival lover!
Measurement: The pin measures 2” wide, 5/8" at the tallest point and is slightly more than 1/4" at its deepest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling setting, the plique-à-jour enameling, or the amethyst stone. The pin clasp is secure and in good working condition.
